A blockchain confirmation is a transaction validated and recorded in a block. Bitcoin has approximately one confirmation every 10 minutes. Ethereum has approximately one every 15 seconds.
When you send Bitcoin to a casino, the transaction is broadcast. After 10 minutes (roughly), it gets one confirmation. After 20 minutes, two confirmations. After an hour, six confirmations.
The question: how many confirmations does a casino require before they credit your account?
The Risk
A transaction with zero confirmations is reversible. Theoretically, the sender could create a conflicting transaction and cancel the original.
In practice, this is hard. Bitcoin's double-spend protection makes it unlikely (but not impossible) to reverse a 0-confirmation transaction.
A transaction with one confirmation is essentially final for practical purposes. The effort to reverse it exceeds the value for most attacks.
With six confirmations (roughly one hour for Bitcoin), the transaction is considered irreversible for all practical purposes.
The Casino's Policy
Most casinos credit your account after one confirmation. Some require two or three (taking 20-30 minutes).
Causino is usually faster than banks (which take one to three business days for wire transfers) but slower than e-wallets (which are instant).
The Confusion
Players often confuse "confirmation" with "cleared to withdraw." They're not the same.
A crypto deposit may be confirmed (on the blockchain) but still require KYC verification or AML review before you can play or withdraw.
You might see "1 confirmation" and think your deposit is spendable. In reality, you need to complete verification first.
The Blockchain Size
A blockchain is just a record. Bitcoin's blockchain contains all Bitcoin transactions since 2009. Your transaction is a tiny part.
When you send Bitcoin, your transaction competes with thousands of other transactions for space in the next block.
Fee market determines priority. Higher fees get included faster. Lower fees wait.
The Latency
If you send Bitcoin with a low fee during high congestion, you might wait hours for one confirmation.
Send with a high fee during low congestion, and you get confirmation in minutes.
This is why casinos should specify the required fee. Some even subsidize fees (so the player doesn't pay the network fee themselves).
The Testing
Before making a large deposit, test with a small amount. Send 0.01 Bitcoin, watch the confirmations accumulate, verify the casino credits your account, and only then send larger amounts.
This avoids the risk of sending a large amount and discovering the casino has unusual requirements or the transaction gets stuck.
The Ethereum and Other Chains
Ethereum confirmations are faster (every 15 seconds vs Bitcoin's 10 minutes) but less final (finality is less absolute). Most casinos require similar numbers of confirmations as Bitcoin (1-3).
Other chains (Polygon, Avalanche) are faster still. But fewer casinos support them.
The Bottom Line
Blockchain confirmations are the mechanism by which crypto transactions become irreversible. More confirmations mean more security.
For casino deposits, one to three confirmations are standard. Verify your casino's policy before depositing.
Understanding confirmations prevents the panic of "where's my deposit?" when the transaction just hasn't been confirmed yet.
